I sit listening to Lil Wayne's Rebirth album and I cannot seem to shake the feeling of awe I get everytime I start to play the songs. His debut "Rock album" was a failure to some but to me it emphasises how apt his tattoo (and name) "Tune" describes him.
Some critics had only negative reviews about the album but since I like to play devil's advocate a lot (and also because I am a huge Wayne fan....call it being biased) I will lean in the opposite direction.
Personally, I think the "Rebirth" is a different look at the rapper's versatile talent. We find ourselves in such a structured society that it is hard to be spontaneous whenever we want to.
What is the point of being a creative person when you put a rigid label on what you can achieve? From whence comes the spontaneity then? Listening to the album made me realize a lot others fail to see.
This was a creative album, a purely creative one. Wayne has the reputation of being a rap artiste but he tried to break that rigid label with his dip into rock music. There is nothing wrong with that, in my opinion.
He gave us a good rendition of the rock genre on this complete album and still retained his own personal style. His talent shone where he transitioned smoothly, in his lyrics, from rock to rap and back to rock without destroying the song. That, is what a creative acheives.
There was no need to render this as a new genre and give it a whole different name like others do. It was pure and simple rock music, made by a rap soul. The album weaves a story and tells a lot indirectly.
For once, we saw heart-wrenching, stomach-gutting, banging rock music and not the lewd lines we often pick up from most of Wayne's songs. This was pure talent and it is an album I would love for a lifetime, merely for its bold taste, unique style...... and good music of course.
